Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in Central and Western Europe — 77 kilometres long, 600 square kilometres in area — and for Hungarians, it is the sea. Every summer, the southern and northern shores come alive with campers, cyclists, windsurfers and sunbathers, and a quiet but well-established naturist tradition has been part of Balaton life for decades.
All three naturist destinations in this directory sit within easy reach of the lake — two directly on its shores, one just inland near the world-famous thermal spa town of Hévíz. Together they offer everything from a large, well-managed lakefront campsite to an intimate naturist farm-stay combining rural Western Hungary with some of the finest thermal spa culture in Europe.

Hungary's naturist heartland
The Balatontourist Camping Naturist Berény holds a distinction unique on the entire lake: it is the only naturist campsite with direct lakefront access on Lake Balaton, and its beach is the only official naturist beach on Hungary's beloved inland sea. Located at the quieter, less commercialised south-western end of the lake, the 5.5-hectare site sits directly on the water, sheltered by a fringe of reeds and opened out onto a wide, beautifully landscaped naturist area.
The site's most celebrated feature is its enormous circular sunbathing pier — the largest built sunbathing platform on the entire lake — extending out over the shallows where guests swim, wade and sunbathe above the water. The lake is very shallow here; guests walk almost 200 metres to reach swimming depth, making it wonderfully safe for families. The 217 flat, grassed touring pitches (all with electricity) and 100 tent pitches are well-spaced under mature trees. Facilities include a restaurant and snack bar, massage, minigolf, petanque, giant outdoor chess, beach volleyball, table tennis and SUP rental. The Balatontourist mobile sauna festival has been held annually here since 2021. The Balaton Bike Circuit runs directly past the site.
Angela Farm is a cosy naturist campsite and bungalow park in the village of Nemesbük, tucked into the hills of Western Hungary five kilometres north of Hévíz and nine kilometres from Keszthely. It is small enough to feel genuinely personal — 99 places across camping pitches, wooden cabins, bungalows and villas — and the setting in a typical Hungarian village, surrounded by the gentle countryside of the Zala hills, gives it a character that larger lakeside campsites cannot match.
The combination of naturism and thermal spa culture is Angela Farm's real distinction. Hévíz, a short drive away, is home to the world's largest natural thermal lake — its warm, lotus-covered surface fed by a subterranean spring and open to bathers year-round. Kehida thermal spa is just four kilometres from the farm. On site, guests have access to an outdoor pool, sauna, gym and Reiki massage — a proper naturist wellness retreat in its own right. Free WiFi throughout, barbecue facilities and bar service complete the picture. Dogs are welcome. The property runs as naturist-only from April to September; clothed guests are welcome between October and March, making it accessible for off-season visits.
Levendula Naturist Camping occupies a lovely position on the northern shore of Lake Balaton in the quiet village of Balatonakali — a setting that regulars describe as among the most peaceful on the entire lake. Where Balatonberény on the south shore is the more established facility, Levendula offered the particular charm of the north shore: the Balaton Uplands rising behind, hillside vineyards on the slopes, and a gentler, unhurried rhythm quite different from the busier south.
When operating, the campsite had hedged pitches of varying sizes in direct contact with the lake shore, a children's playground and strong family appeal, a private beach area, landing stages, a shared TV lounge and seasonal animation in high season. One of its most distinctive features was proximity to the railway: Balatonakali-Dörgicse station is just 300 metres from the site, allowing car-free travel along the northern shore of the lake. The baroque towns, castles and old churches of Veszprém County are easily accessible from here.
